Mass Timber and Seismically Resilient Engineering HQ

Established in 1985, Fast + Epp is an internationally recognized structural engineering firm headquartered in Vancouver, Canada. They are known for their holistic design and their award-winning projects prove their forward-thinking approach to structures of all types - notably The Richmond Olympic Oval, UBC Tallwood House and The Spar.

Situated on the Ring of Fire, Vancouver is prone to experience seismic activity. The Fast + Epp team designed their office with a completely innovative and practical approach. As structural engineers, Fast + Epp knew their ability to operate on behalf of their clients and the City of Vancouver would be vital in the aftermath of a seismic event. The decision to go for an 'above-code' design using Tectonus devices was itself a no-brainer.

The hybrid, mass timber superstructure which includes Tectonus connections was erected in 4 weeks. The building was opened in 2020 and continues to be a showcase visited by engineers, architects and clients all over the world.

Visit the Fast + Epp website for more information.

Seismic Hold Downs for Rocking CLT Shear Walls

The new headquarters of the Fast + Epp office have been designed with an emphasis on innovation, future tech and design, and encouraging employee wellness and productivity.

The building combines the latest interior, sustainable design features and seismic technology. The Tectonus devices are visible in parts of the structure with units in shearwalls and braces - an ongoing reminder to staff and visitors of Fast + Epp's dedication to safety and business continuity.

The Tectonus units fit seamlessly into the profile of the shearwalls.

A knife plate is installed within the transverse layers. Dowels of different sizes can be used. Out-of-plane rocking is ensured through the use of a swivel bearing at the bottom pin connection.
